Germander Speedwell & her Parsnip Surprise

A Year With A Silver Lining?

In what has been a difficult and challenging year for everyone across the world, we come to the end of it with a glimmer or two of hope for 2021.

Thankfully for us and our Team we have managed to stay well; we have all worked hard to minimise our contact with others outside the work environment and so have basically spent the year 'at home' or 'at work'. For Serena and I work is home and we have worked seven days a week since late February, save for four days off - so we are just a little bit tired now!

Whilst for many stuck at home the year has dragged, for us the year has flown by as we have struggled to keep up with production and get orders 'out the door' - there just have not been enough hours in the day! But for now things have slowed just a little, and that is the same in the gardening year; with the cold weather now here and the Christmas holiday period almost upon us it's the perfect time to stay in the warm and reflect on the successes and failures of the year that has nearly passed, and plan for the growing year ahead.

But don't rest on your Laurels for too long as late December and early January really does see the start of the new gardening year! Christmas Day afternoon was the traditional time for sowing Onions; whilst few of us will keep up the tradition it's a timely reminder of the start of the growing Season ahead and the need to plan what you are going to grow. Now's the time to be looking at our range of Vegetable Seeds and Vegetable Plants and putting together your order. Of course bare root fruit and hedging planting can continue right through the grotty Winter months too - and an earlier planting will pay dividends in the Spring and Summer as, when the soil starts to warm, adventitious root growth will imperceptibly start making for quicker establishment and reducing the need for Summer watering (but not reducing it completely).

Despite all the 'bad' 2020 has thrown at us all, it has brought some good with a resurgence of 'at home activities' - from home baking, to railway modelling, to gardening. This year we have helped many discover the joy of gardening, as well as helped those re-kindle their nearly lost interest. One of our customers, Germander Speedwell (the lady with her surprise parsnip pictured above), summed things up perfectly in a Tweet a few months back...

"#2020 has been the weirdest and hardest year of my life in so many ways, but 6 months of #shielding alone with my mum & having 24hr live-in care put in place as my health deteriorated has had some surprising #silverlinings! "Mum & I decided shielding was the ideal time to return to 'growing our own' in the garden and we had huge success, with a little bit of help from @Victoriana_NG. We have been making soups & salads non stop since July!"

For us the many similar lovely Cards, Notes, Tweets and Messages on Facebook and Instagram have been true joy to read, and kept us going when we have been close to exhaustion.

And so for now it just leaves me to to say is a huge thank you to all our customers (our gardening friends) for the orders you have placed with us in 2020 - Here's to a better 2021 !

Be sure to follow all our antics at the nursery on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram you'll be able to see what we're doing when - a good guide to what you should be doing too!

Wishing You a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2021 !
