Description

This vegetable plant collection has been put together for those who aren't really sure where to start! We feel that the plants within this collection are fairly easy to grow (provided you remember to water them) and don't take too long to be ready to harvest. The best bit of all is that you can't beat the flavour of homegrown produce (and the vitamin content is at its max as well).

We have chosen beetroot, broad beans, French beans, rocket, peas and runner beans. However, we offer many other types of vegetables as small plants so if you don't like our choice then please feel free to select your own.

All our plants are fully hardened off when we send them to you, which means that they are ready to be planted straight out into the garden (no need to pot them up and bring them on in a greenhouse or anything like that. In fact they prefer to go straight in the ground or in the raised beds that you have ready for them). We never recommend feeding the plants provided you have reasonable soil in the first place (and some of these plants will actually put nutrients back into the ground when you have finished harvesting their crop so don't be in too much of a hurry to pull them up).

You will need to offer some sort of support for the French and Runner beans to climb up. This can be trellis or bean poles (or we use bamboo canes, which we take down for the winter, move and reuse the following year) up to about 6 feet (1.8 metres) tall. The peas need from some support up to about 3 feet (90 cms) high but if you can't offer this they will grow in a 'heap' on the ground. The beetroot, broad beans and rocket don't need any support at all. For planting distances please check out the individual pages for each plant (there is a link for them in the list below).

Don't forget we are always at the end of an email or the phone if you need advice but gardening really isn't as difficult as you might think and can be very relaxing and good for you (increase your vitamin D from the sunshine, but don't forget the sunscreen if it's really sunny!). Go on give it a try; you know you want to!
