RHS Award of Garden Merit

Description

There are few plants that can surprise as much as these.

During the autumn and winter months they die back to nothing so there is absolutely nothing to be seen (so mark where you have planted them). Come the early spring pinnate leaves emerge from the ground to form low growing clumps - all so unassuming.

Come mid June, flower spikes rise up to 2 feet (60 cm) from the clumps and open to show a truly stunning display or red cones covered in tiny purple flowers. Really dramatic!

One of our favourite garden subjects that never ceases to amaze.

  • Thrive in a moist soil - so suitable for pond-side planting.
  • Grow to approximately 4" (10 cm) tall. Flower spikes rise to approximately 2 feet (60 cm) tall.
  • Prefer a partial shade position, but will grow well in more sunnier positions if the soil remains moist.
  • Plant 12" (30 cm) apart.
