In Like A Lion!
Happy New Year! Right, thats the cheerful stuff out of the way - back to the weather...
Apparently, the golden rule of marketing is to play down the negatives and always be positive. Whilst we'd love to stick our head in the sand and do that, the reality is that for many of us the winds and rains that have been battering the UK since before Christmas have overtaken our lives for the moment.
We have been lucky, and far luckier than many; we have had damage, we have had power problems and the ground is saturated (as we are one of the highest places in Kent if we ever had flooding we really would worry about everyone below). But we have coped, patched things up as they've broken and struggled through as best we can - and that is all we can do. For our gardening friends that are still suffering we really do feel for you, and we sincerely hope things improve as soon as possible - and that the weather has finally turned the corner.
There is no doubt now there are going to be huge food shortages in the UK this year, especially British grown food as so many crops have been devastated and continue to sit under water. The supermarkets will try and bolster supplies from abroad, but there are even doubts that the supply will be there to meet demand - and if, like us, you believe in only eating your own or locally grown that wont be an option.
But to counter all this gloom and doom there is a massive glimmer of hope - we can all grow our own!
It is January, the start of the growing season (and way to early for starting many many things); the weather will improve and in just a few month's time the apparent futility of now will be but a memory!
But please, please do not be in too much of a rush; already on social media and forums gardeners are goading each other with, "I have already sown this", or "such and such has already germinated" - and such madness is fuelled by the gardening magazines who's February issues (and so February advice because they like to have their magazine out a month ahead) were planned and written months back with no knowledge of the weather ahead.
Over a week into January and we still have not sown anything at the nursery - we will start next week (13th) and sow with the season and the weather. If you follow us on Twitter @Victoriana_NG you'll know what we're doing when!
