Is Winter On Its Way?
What a year it has been! The snows of January and February did eventually go - but left us with the coldest Spring for many years. In the long run nature did what it is best at doing and everything caught up - and even excelled with producing bumper harvests of many crops including soft fruits and grapes! And then we thought an Indian Summer was on its way, which ended up baring more resemblance to the monsoons of India! And now at the beginning of December temperatures are still well above average; what we really need to see is some much needed cold and frost! Is Winter on its way? Lets hope so!
With the Christmas holiday period upon us it's the perfect time to stay in the warm and reflect on the successes and failures of the year that has nearly passed and plan for the growing year ahead.
But don't rest on your Laurels for too long as late December and early January really does see the start of the gardening Season! Christmas Day afternoon was the traditional time for sowing Onions; whilst few of us will keep up the tradition its a timely reminder of the start of the growing Season ahead and the need to plan what you are going to grow. Now's the time to be looking at our range of Vegetable Seeds and Vegetable Plants and putting together your order. Of course bare root fruit and hedging planting can continue right through the grotty Winter months too - and an earlier planting will pay dividends in the Spring and Summer as, when the soil starts to warm, adventitious root growth will imperceptibly start making for quicker establishment and reducing the need for Summer watering (but not reducing it completely).
But enough about things you can eat! Now is also the time to plan the ornamental garden - or even just make a little space for growing some flowers for cutting. Gardening shouldn't just be about providing sustenance for the body, but for the mind also - and there is nothing quite as cheering as some 'pretty plants'.
So whilst there is much to do over the next few weeks and months ahead, for now, all we have left to say is a big thank you to all our customers (our gardening friends) for the orders you have placed with us over the past year.
