Description

Our scrambling rambling blend of rich bright colours makes a stunning Summer ground cover and is especially useful to trail down a steep sunny bank as trails can be up to 5 - 6 feet (1.5 - 1.8 metres) in length - they can partially climb too given support. These also make a lovely hanging basket plant.

Trails can be cut and placed in a low bowl of water in a sunny window and will continue to grow and flower in the home.

  • Annual.
  • Sow March to May under protection in small pots or module trays and just cover.
  • Grow on under cover before hardening off and planting out after any further frosts.
  • Plant out 2 feet (60 cm) apart.
  • Nasturtiums thrive in full sun and poor soils.
  • Culinary Uses
  • Both the flowers and leaves can be chopped and added to salads to give a pleasant peppery kick (the leaves are more peppery than the flowers); the cheerful flowers can also be used as a garnish to drinks and Summer salads to give them a tropical look.
  • Come the Autumn the plants will set seed these can be saved for next year or can be pickled and used as an alternative to capers.
  • Other Uses
  • A further use of this wonderful plant is as a sacrificial food plant for cabbage white caterpillars; the butterflies love them, and a few Nasturtiums planted on the vegetable patch should help to keep your Brassicas clear of caterpillars as the butterflies will choose Nasturtiums over Brassicas as a place to lay their eggs.
  • Similarly Aphids and Blackfly will also be attracted to them so once again they can be used as a sacrificial host plant on your veg garden allowing your vegetables to grow in peace!
