Just to say thank you. The Heron protection electric fence is just great. Ordered Thursday, delivered Monday, finished installing on Wednesday, the pond was attacked Wednesday night I am not sure if it was a cat or heron but my prize fish is still cruising around. I knew the electric fence would work, as I thought I would improve the route to earth by adding an extra earth wire round the pond and back to the energizer, thinking it's not going to have much power I did not turn the mains off, the earth wire touched the live wires, and although I don’t have much hair, I believe what I have was styled into a punk hair do in an instant. Excellent piece of kit, along with excellent service and advice. (plus Hair styling optional extra for thick'os who don't respect electricity).

Phew, What A Scorcher - Or Not?
So June blazed into July in the true sense of the word - heat! But now its not so nice, wet, cold and windy.
Mid June we felt like we were getting on top - and then came the heat meaning our time for 'getting things done' diminished as we struggled to keep on top of watering. So now at the beginning of July we are behind on our jobs and in places under a sea of weeds! Why is it that the weeds manage to grow so well without water when your plants don't?
Of course, on the plus side for all gardeners there is now an abundance to harvest in the garden - both the kitchen garden and the floral garden. In our protected vegetable area we have done well with early crops of carrots, climbing peas, climbing beans and potatoes and now we are cropping cucumbers, tomatoes and chillies - and already the courgettes are beating us into submission!
Outside, things have been a little slower as, despite those hot days, night temperatures have been in the main still quite cool. The Sweetcorn has finally got going as have most of the outdoor pumpkins and squashes (thankfully temperatures improved just in time for the 1600 school children who received pumpkin plants from us for our annual pumpkin growing competition). But already we're cropping Summer salads, artichokes, beetroot, carrots, peas, broad beans spinach and all sorts of other things!
Ignoring the aforementioned weeds, the flower garden really is also starting to colour up; we knew we were going to have a weed problem here as this piece of ground is only in its second year of use, but as most of the flowers are being used for cut flower its not the end of the world!
So is there much we can be doing in the garden other than harvesting, watering, weeding and tending? Of course there is!
Now is the perfect time for filling those hungry gaps in your flower borders, and the warmer temperatures will ensure the plants establish well before the onset of Winter. So spend a little time looking through our Pretty Perennials section as well as our Fuchsias section; Fuchsias seem to have fallen from favour in recent years which is such a shame as they are such a versatile and worthwhile plant which we really can't recommend enough - and this year our Fuchsia house looks wonderful (and probably the tidiest place on the nursery(.
On the vegetable garden its successional sowing and planting time, making sure you have fresh produce into the late Autumn. There is still plenty that can be planted now so have a look through our vegetable plants section for some inspiration - if its marked as 'Buy ... Now' its available now (and 'now' is a great time for planting it).
