Description

Lovely fern like green leaves with clusters of little white flowers, the plants almost look feathery and you want to run your hand through the foliage! Sweet cicely has the scent of aniseed when crushed.

Native to the mountains in Europe and will grow well in colders areas of the UK (although does withstand hot Summers here too!)

The leaves, flowers and seeds are all edible and can be a good 'zero-calorie' replacement for sugar, alternatively the leaves can be cooked like spinach or used in salad. It has been used to treat stomach aches and coughs.

Also known as Myrrth, Shepherd's needle and sweet chervil.

  • Herbaceous perennial.
  • Flowers from May to June.
  • Likes a fertile but well drained soil.
  • Likes a sunny or part shade position.
  • Reaches approximately 6½ feet (2 metres) tall.
  • Will self seed.
  • Mature plants can be split in the Spring or Autumn.

Culinary Uses

  • Roots can be used to make wine.
  • Leaves can be used like spinach or salad leaves.
  • Sugar alternative.
  • Stalks can be used like celery.
  • Makes a nice 'Schnapps'.
  • Can be candied.

  • To treat stomach aches.
  • Treat coughs.
