The Roaring Twenties Are Here!

Happy New Year! - Happy New Decade! - The start of the Roaring Twenties!

For us the return from the Christmas and New Year Break sees us hit the ground running as we gear up for the busy Season ahead. So much to do in so little time. Batch one of the Onions are sown and up, the first of the Chillies are sown too.

And so over the weeks and months ahead our propagation beds will fill to bursting point and we will start the annual fight to find space - the annual process of successional sowings and batches of cuttings going on well lit heated beds... - then as soon as we can onto the open heated greenhouse benches... - then moved to ‘cold glass’... -  before being hardened off PROPERLY... - and finally being ready to dispatch!

This year some of our customers will see we have reduced down our range of young vegetable plants; sadly the economics (labour, heating and lighting) of growing some plants means we would need to increase the price of them to the point their price would be unattractive. Perhaps in future years the economics in growing will change again...

But with regard to your sowings, please just remember it is better to be a little bit late than too early. It doesn't matter how much warmth you give many subjects including Tomatoes and Chillies, if the light levels are not there yet and so you will simply end up with weak and leggy seedlings. Already on social media and forums gardeners are goading each other with, "I have already sown this", or "such and such has already germinated" - and such madness is fuelled by the gardening magazines who's March issues will very soon be out (yes, the March issues and so March advice advice because they like to have their magazine out over a month ahead) were planned and written months back with no knowledge of what the weather will be doing! We have benefit of good heat and supplementary lighting so can start things a little earlier - but even so we have to think ahead to what light levels will be like when plants are moved from the prop area.

So our top tip for the New Year is sow with the Seasons and the Weather. If you follow all our antics at the nursery on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram you'll be able to see what we're doing when - a good guide to what you should be doing too!
