Description
Known as the Cider Gum tree as it is used by the Aborigines in Australia to make a cider like alcoholic drink from the sweet sap.
Very fast growing, this evergreen tree has a lovely glaucous green foliage and silver grey bark that peels to reveal paler bark below. Very ornamental in every way and a firm favourite with flower arrangers as its decorative foliage proves so useful.
Given its ultimate size this is plant best suited for the larger garden - or if being used for hedging the larger hedge! For those with 'spare ground' this is an excellent plant for fuel wood production as it grow fast and comes back well when coppiced. Plant 18" (45 cm) apart.
- Ultimate height 40 feet + (12 metres +). Can be trimmed to any height above 6 feet (1.8 metres). Average annual growth rate 3 - 4 feet (90 - 120 cm).
- Ultimate width 26 feet (8 metres). Can be trimmed to any width over 4 feet (120 cm).
- For hedging purposes we would recommend planting at 3 feet (90 cm) apart.
- Grows well in most soil types (including chalky and clay) and both those tending to lay wet or dry.
- Suitable for most aspects from full sun to partial shade. Does not perform well in dense shade.
- Suitable for coastal areas.
- Performs well in exposed / windy positions.
