Vitis vinifera 'Prior'

Description

Prior is similar to Pinot Noir and likes a similar location, although usually ripens slightly later. It was bred from (Joannes Seyve 234-16 x Pinot Noir) x (Merzling x (Zarya Severa x St Laurent)) by Norbert Becker in 1987 at State Viticulture Institute Freiburg and the result it quite pleasing. It is known to grow well in Germany, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Italy.

It is resistant to frost, downy and powdery mildew.

The grapes produced are intense red, with a light fruity/spicy flavour, rich in tannins.

  • Mid season fruit ripening.
  • Can be grown both outdoors or under protection (greenhouse, polytunnel or conservatory).
  • Can be trained using either the cane replacement method or spur pruning.
  • Self fertile.
  • Fruit contains seeds.
