Description
Purple Fennel is also known as Purple Leaf Fennel and is a member of theApiaceae family.
It is a large biennial (or can be grown as an annual) with small golden, yellow flowers and aromatic fruits. The leaves are purple when young turning a grey-green colour as they age. This variety is upright, clump forming one which usually reaches approximately 6 feet (1.8 metres) tall.
This variety of fennel can be quite impressive in your borders if planted with Bergamot or ornamental grasses.
The fennel has the usual aniseed flavour to it and can be used to make tea as well as being a good accompaniment to fish dishes.
A great herb to hang over your door if you don't like Halloween as it keeps away witches (it won't be used for this purpose in our house, but I don't care much for fennel...)
Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.
