Sweetcorn Seeds

Growing sweetcorn is not as complicated as some might have you believe - as long as you have warm ambient temperatures and plenty of space, sweetcorn growing should be straightforward!

Sow under protection and if possible, continue to grow under protection to guarantee the best yielding crops. Only plant outside when risk of frosts has passed and air temperatures are improving - usually from late May onwards.

Growing sweetcorn can come with its challenges in our relatively mild British climate, and swelling cobs and planted sweetcorn seeds can often prove very attractive to naughty mice! However, sweetcorn growing is by no means a lost cause!

When buying sweetcorn seeds, the first thing you need to consider is whether you have the space for fully-grown sweetcorn plants. Standard-sized plants need to grow in blocks around 15" apart in 18" rows, whereas babycorn varieties can be planted quite a bit closer. Secondly, you need to consider whether your location will adversely affect your sweetcorn cob yield.

Not only do the sweetcorn seeds need a warm start, but the plants also require steady warm ambient temperatures to thrive, away from prevailing winds. Since the introduction of cold-tolerant varieties such as Seville things have become easier - especially for more northern gardeners who previously struggled with growing sweetcorn outside - but even so, delaying planting to late May/early June when temperatures have warmed up will really give your crop a boost.

We supply a selection of sweetcorn seeds that include 'babycorn' and 'popcorn' varieties. We're happy to recommend varieties to our customers if you need a little guidance, and provide detailed summaries of what to expect from each listing that we offer. We can guarantee that your homegrown sweetcorn will be that much sweeter than shop-bought produce, as the sugar in the cobs will begin to convert to starch the moment you cut your cobs from the plant. For that reason, we strongly recommend eating your cobs as fresh as possible to enjoy them at their best!
