Description
Always a ready supply of garlic flavoured, flat grass type, leaves as a perennial. Not so pungent in flavour as garlic clove but needs to be cut regularly. Has a delightful white flower, which also tastes of mild garlic.
A welcome palatable alternative to those who like garlic to accompany cheese and soups.
A herb, not a vegetable though related to the onion.
Recognised to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.
- Hardy perennial.
- Evergreen in most climates, but can die back in harsh Winters.
- Flat leaves.
- Mild garlic / onion flavour.
- White flowers June to August.
- Likes a sunny position but will tolerate shade.
- Likes rich, moist but well drained soil. Will tolerate poorer soils.
- Remove flowers for best flavour, but flowers can be used in salads.
- Split / divide every 3 -4 years in Spring.
- Can be grown indoors or out.
- Usually reach 12 - 24" (30 - 60 cm) tall.
- Always leave 2" (5 cm) for best re-growth.

- Flowers can be used in salad.
- Leaves can be used in salad, omelettes, sandwiches, cream cheese and so much more!

- Contain mild antibiotics and some iron.

- Planted near peach trees, they can help to control leaf curl.
- Planted near roses they can help improve the roses scent.
- Can be made into a spray and used to help prevent potato blight
