Description

This classic old variety is arguably one of the best varieties of Rhubarb there is - and when it comes to forcing it probably is the best! Unforced, the ruby-red thin stems are ready for harvest late May. Forced, the stems have a beautiful pale pink tinge.

Either way it is a gorgeously sweet variety, and perfect for making its namesake - Rhubarb Champagne.

Reliable and very easy to grow.

  • Prefers a rich but well drained soil.
  • Plant any time of year, spacing plants 3 x 3 feet (90 x 90 cm) apart.
  • Keep weed free and water well in dry spells.
  • Avoid harvesting in the first year and only lightly in the second.
  • Harvest by grasping at the base of the stalk and tearing away from the clump.
  • When growth dies down in the Autumn generously mulch the crown with well rotted manure or similar.

Forcing

  • Forcing rhubarb results in an earlier crop that is sweeter and more tender (though with a smaller overall yield).
  • To force Rhubarb, cover the crowns shortly after Christmas with a light excluding container with a removable lid - to ensure light is fully excluded you can pile up organic matter or similar around the base.
  • Periodically remove the lid from your container and check for shoots, removing when large enough.
  • After approximately mid April, uncover the crowns and allow to grow away in the normal way - though avoid cropping from a forced crown for a year or two in order to allow it to recover.
