Description

A commonly known variety of Russet apple although sometimes by the name of Knobby Russet, Winter Russet, Old Maids or Winter Apple. It is famously known as the ugliest apple!

Introduced in Sussex in 1819 it was nearly extinct by the 1940s when it was rediscovered during World War II through the national fruit trials.

This tree will produce medium - large green and yellow fruits which flushes red when ripe, with a rough, black russet with an irregular and knobbly (dare we say wart like) appearance. Would make a great apple for Halloween apple bobbing! The flesh however is delicious and creamy with a sweet-tart taste and so worth growing so you can enjoy it.  It can appear a little more like a potato than an apple in appearance and texture (two for the price of one?) but give it a go, we don't think you'll be disappointed.

We recommend that you eat these apples fresh from the tree - they go particularly well with cheese.

  • Partially self-fertile - but pollination by another apple will maximise yield.
  • Harvest mid-late October.
  • Season of use October - March.
  • Grown on MM106 rootstock for an ultimate (unpruned) height of 12-15ft (3.65-4.6m) but can easily be kept at a height of 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m).

  • Medicinal Uses
  • Good source of Vitamin C
