Description

The variegated type is extremely ornamental, with soft, hairy oval leaves that are green edged with cream. In late summer it produces dense spikes of highly scented tiny pink /mauve flowers.Native to southern and western Europe, apple mint is a strong-growing perennial with a speading habit.

Known to the Greeks as the herb of hospitality, mint was first used as a room deodoriser. The sweet, fruity fragrance of variegated apple mint makes it an ideal addition to fruit drinks.

  • Perennial.
  • Highly ornamental.
  • Grows to 18" (45 cms) in height.
  • Prefers poor, moist soil but happy in most conditions.
  • Likes a full sun position but will tolerate partial shade.
  • Can be invasive so best grown in a container.
  • Cut back at end of season.
  • Trim off all-green shoots to avoid reversion to parent type .
  • Attractive to bees.

  • Can be used to make apple mint jelly.
  • Can be used in mint tea.
  • Ideal as a garnish for salads.
  • Fresh leaves can be chopped into soft cheese or yoghurt.
