Description

Probably the hardiest of all the cabbage family, they thrive in a cold damp winter! Savoy Cabbages can withstanding lower temperatures than most other crops, making them the perfect Winter vegetable. This blend of varieties should ensure that the whole crop isn't ready all at the same time.

Some people are put off growing and eating cabbage because of their experiences of soggy cabbage served up at school; Savoy Cabbages will restore their faith - crunchy and full of flavour this is a vegetable that can be prepared in oh-so-many ways from the plain and simple to the gourmet. Shredding finely and pan-frying in butter, a splash of white wine and finishing with grated nutmeg makes a fantastically simple gourmet dish.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects if allowed to 'go over' and flower (so if you have room leave any plants in that have gone too far rather than pulling them out straight away).

  • Set out 18" (45 cm) apart in rows 18" (45 cm) apart.
  • Harvest approximately November-February.
  • Top Tips
  • Whilst Savoy Cabbages grow well in a rich soil, too rich a soil or overfeeding will make them less hardy and more susceptible to frost damage.
  • Protect from pigeons - pigeons love Brassicas (so do partridges).
  • Take precautions against the dreaded Cabbage White butterfly - inspect your crop regularly, spray with our BioFriend Plant Defence or use a physical barrier such as insect netting.
