Our Feedback
Just a note to say how pleased I am with the carnations I ordered earlier this year. They are putting on a tremendous show and the perfume takes me back to sitting in my grandfathers garden in the 1940s.Do you or will you have any different varieties,if soI would like to order.

Description

Probably the earliest of all shallots, this Dutch red variety produces a heavy crop of smaller bulbs that have an intense, almost spicy, flavour.

It is not unusual for this variety to be ready for harvesting in July - yet it will often keep firm and well until the following May.

Couple this with an excellent resistance to bolting and it is easy to understand why this is such a popular variety.

  • Set out 6-8" (15-20 cm) apart in rows 8" (20 cm).
  • Take out a drill approximately 1" (2.5 cm) deep and push into the bottom of the drill (pointed side up) before covering with soil, leaving the tops just showing.
  • Alternatively take out shallow holes with a dibber and pop in - again leaving the tops just showing.
  • Top Tips
  • Recently planted sets may need to be protected with netting or similar to prevent birds pulling them out of the soil.
  • Keep weed free at all times.
  • Avoid over-watering, but water thoroughly in warm dry spells.
