Description

Splendid-quality well-rooted plants to ensure a really glorious breathtaking screen that filters out wind, grime and noise.

Also known as the Osier Willow.

Environmentally beneficial in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and can be useful in particularly wet areas for 'absorbing' the water; very often found along river banks.

If you wish these can reach 20-24 feet (6-7.5 metres) high in 3-4 years. Alternatively you can cut them back once a year. These trees are make a very good screen.

Please note, these are well-rooted 2 ft (60 cm) tall plants, not un-rooted willow sets.

These willows are suitable for making sculptures. Willow branches are strong and pliable.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.

Cultivation Guidance

  • On Arrival
  • If the plants are dry stand the plants in a bucket of water for no more than half an hour.
  • Ideally they should be planted out as soon as possible; if this is not possible either 'heel' the plants into a shallow trench or alternatively wrap the roots back up in the bark chip and polythene they arrived in and store the plants in a cool frost free place -  do not keep them in a warm place as they will start to come into growth prematurely. Every few days, check that the roots are moist, and plant out as soon as is practicable.
  • Incorporating organic matter such as well-rotted manure (not fresh) or compost into the soil will give your plants the best start. Under no circumstances should you use any stimulants, fertiliser or bonemeal at planting time as these products will ‘burn’ any new root growth and slow your plants’ development!
  • Water as necessary, particularly during their first year; willows like to drink plenty of water.
  • Aftercare
  • Keep your developing hedge free of weeds (once your hedge is established, weeds will not cause a problem).
  • Your hedge can be trimmed or sculpted once it has reached your desired height.
