Description

Originating from South Africa (where it is known as the Gem Squash), this is lovely variety of Summer squash that is both reliable and heavy cropping; each plant can produce fifteen, or even more, cricket ball sized fruits.

We like to train this variety to 'climb' and each year tie the sprawling plants in on bamboo cane archways to create an attractivefeature.

As we say, the fruits of this variety are cricket ball sized - but that is not their only resemblance as the dark green (almost black) skin is also extremely thick and tough making them almost as hard as cricket balls! But don't let that thick skin put you off, a sharp knife will easily get through and it only goes to help protect these fruits that, although ready early in the Summer, will keep right through to Christmas.

The pale orange flesh has a lovely texture making it perfect for sautéing or roasting - and due to its high sugar content it caramelises beautifully. Of all the squashes this is probably the easiest and most reliable one there is - and one we really would recommend.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.
