Description

We think the name 'Stinking Hellebore' is actually unfair as while the fragrance from the flowers is strong it is not unpleasant and often likened to the perfume of Mahonia flowers.

Named after the famous garden designer, Gertrude Jekyll, what stands this apart from many other Hellebore species is the fine divisions to its leaves. But the real beauty is the pale green flowers with their delicate purple lips that appear shortly after Christmas (and can stay until April).

This really is a very pretty plant and a delight to have in the garden.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.

  • Flower from January to April.
  • Grow to a height of around 2 - 3 feet (60 - 80 cm).
  • Thrive in partial shade but will also perform well in either deeper shade or sun.
  • Prefer a moist but well drained soil and are particularly good on alkaline soils.
