ZZZ DISCONTINUED Old English Dwarf Lavender Hedging

So popular in Victorian England, Lavender really does make a wonderful low boundary hedge. It can easily be kept pruned 'neat and tidy' (squared off) or for maximum flower left to form a more informal mound shape of hedge.

In the alternative plant in groups of three around the garden for amazing scent and colour.

It was popular in the past for the Greeks and Romans to bath in due to it's 'clean scent'. Lavender has a long lasting fragrance and can also be used to mask household smells (or stinking streets!)

From our experience Lavender is rabbit proof (however you may need to protect it until it is established) making it ideal for those troubled by them - but similarly attracts a wealth of pollinating insects and bees - and of course lavender honey has a wonderful flavour.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.

• Plant 10" (25 cm) apart.
• Ultimate height 2 - 3 feet (60 - 90 cm).
• Can be trimmed to any height above 8" (20 cm).
• Average annual growth rate 12" (30 cm).
• Ultimate width 18" (45 cm). Can be trimmed.
• Grows well in most soil types (including chalky and clay) except those prone to laying wet.
• Suitable for most aspects from full sun to partial shade. Does not perform well in dense shade.
• Suitable for coastal areas.
• Not suitable for particularly exposed / windy positions.

• Culinary Uses
• Can be used to flavour jam or make lavender vinegar.
• Sometimes used in cookies, upmarket marmalades and ice cream!
• Used in Southern European cooking.

• Medicinal Uses
• Can soothe headaches.
• Can calm nerves and act as a relaxant.
• Can relieve depression.
• Eases flatulence, fainting, dizziness or halitosis.
• Has antiseptic properties.
• Has antifungal properties so can help relieve athlete's foot etc.
• Can be used as a decongestant.
• Is a mild sedative and pain killer.
• Can ease insect bites and stings as well as small, cooled burns an sunburn.
• Can minimise scarring and help heal wounds.
• Is a relaxant, great for tired or tense muscles, sprains or rheumatism.
• Can be used on cold sores.

• Other Uses
• Used as dried flowers in sachets in drawers to keep moths away from clothes.
• The flowers rubbed onto your skin will deter flies.
• Can be used to scent firelighters.
• Can speed cell replacement.
• Often added to soap.
• Herb pillows.

• On Arrival!
• Under no circumstances should you use any stimulants, fertiliser or bonemeal at planting time as such products will 'burn' any new root growth and actually slow your plants' development!
• Water thoroughly if the ground is dry.

• After Care.
• It is essential to keep your developing hedge free of weed competition.
• In extended dry periods ensure your plants are watered thoroughly at least once a week; this is even more critical on lighter soils.
• Once established an annual trim just as it comes into growth will stop the hedge from becoming too woody. Be careful not too cut back too hard (only about a third of the woody stems).
• It is not recommended to mulch lavendar (as it can result in it sitting too wet).
