Description

A deliciously sweet yet sharp, crisp variety of apple that grows particularly well in the south of the UK and loves a sunny, sheltered spot.

It is usually ready for harvest late October (but this will depend on the seasons). It has a lovely red and yellow skin with a white flesh and tends to be a heavy cropper on a fairly young tree. The flavour of the fruit improves after it has been picked and apples can be stored into January in a frost-free position.

The Braeburn was discovered in New Zealand in 1952 and has becoming increasingly popular. It is a very important commercial variety as it stores and travels well, in fact improving its flavour.

  • Likes a full sun position.
  • Parentage: Lady Hamilton x Granny Smith (but no-one is sure!)
  • Self-fertile.
  • Eating apple.
  • Mid-late season fruiting.
  • Season of use October to January.
  • Origin: New Zealand.
  • Spur fruit bearer.
  • Grown on MM106 rootstock for an ultimate (unpruned) height of 12-15ft (3.65-4.6m) but can easily be kept at a height of 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m).

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.

Recommended by the RHS to assist in encouraging bats into the garden as the flowers are likely to attract moths and other night-flying insects which bats love to eat!
