Description

Also known as Grenadia, Maracujá doce, Sweet Passionfruit or Sugar Fruit.

Native to Andes Mountains, South America and Mexico.

Has a greenish-white flower with a delightful blue centre and an almost round orange-yellow fruit with small light markings.  The shell of the fruit is hard with a soft inner pulp that protects the black seeds.  With this variety you eat the soft pulpy part. It's deliciously sweet and said to be one of the best flavours from the Passionfruit family.  It contains Vitamin A, C and K as well as being a good source of phosphorus, iron and calcium.

Being an evergreen climbing shrub, the Sweet Granadilla will ramble across the ground and cling onto things with its tendrils. We would recommend that you train it along wires to keep it under control!

Whilst the plant liks nice warm sunny days up to 31°C during its growing season, it will take colder temperatures during its dormant season. However these plants do still require frost protection so are best grown in a conservatory or similar.

  • Likes temperatures around 15-18°C during its growing season.
  • Requires winter frost protection whilst dormant.
  • Evergreen climber.
  • Grows up to 16 feet (5 metres) long.
