Our Feedback
Dear team, my Shirley Giant Onions are growing like mad - all my mates are asking how I grow them so big.I told when I received them as plants I followed your instrutions and just sat back and watched them grow. So I gave them your email. Can't wait to taste them. Be in touch again.

A high yielding, tried and tested, variety which when left in the ground longer will crop even more heavily and has a lovely flavour.

Produces an oval, white skinned potato that has a waxy flesh but a creamy texture and holds its shape well. Great for boiling, salad, new potatoes or making chips. Has good storing ability.

Best grown as a First Early potato but can also be grown as a Second Early or even as a Maincrop, this variety tends to take slightly longer to grow than others and increases yield if you leave a little longer.

Bred by Dr Jack Dunnet MBE in 1968 and recognised to have good slug resistance!

  • First Early.
  • Good disease resistance.
  • Prefers a full sun position.
  • Prefers a free draining soil.
  • Plant February-March (depending on seasons).
  • Harvest May-July (depending on seasons).
  • Chit tubers by placing 'eye face up' in egg boxes or shallow trays and standing in a warm light location.
  • Once small green shoots (or chits) appear move to a cooler location for a few weeks before planting out.
  • Best planted out February - March. Later plantings will be fine but yield may be smaller.
  • Dig trenches approximately 5" (12 cm) deep and 2' 6" (75 cm) apart.
  • Press tubers into the base of the trench 12" (30 cm) apart with chits facing up and cover with soil.
  • Water in and keep the crop well watered in dry spells.
  • When the haulm (top growth of the plants) reaches 8" (20 cm) earth up around the plants leaving just the top 4" (10 cm) showing - repeat again later if required.
  • Potatoes should be ready for harvest approximately 10 weeks after planting.
